RAFCA Awards Day attracts huge numbers to Cowra

The Cowra Tidy Towns Committee, in collaboration with Cowra Shire Council, is delighted to announce the resounding success of the 2023 Recycled Art for Cowra Awards (RAFCA Award). Held on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at the Ngulaway Room at Cowra Shire Council, this year's event surpassed all expectations, celebrating and honouring the exceptional talent and creativity of artists who transform discarded materials into stunning artworks.

The big winners on the day were Skye Fagan from Cowra Public in the Primary Individual section for her “Trojan Horse” creation, Nettie’s House Family Daycare for their “Tiddalick the Frog” artwork in the Preschool category, Cowra Public in the Infants section for “Bugbug the Owl” and Laura Price who won Best in Show for her fearsome, metal “My Pet Dragon” sculpture (pictured).

Yadhandah class (Mulyan Public School) won the Mark’s Pumps All Ability division for “Tiddalick” while Jacob Cranney and Ruby and Samuel Lazanski were among the big winners on the day claiming People’s Choice and getting the nod in the Primary sector for “Grazing Emus.” Junior High went to St. Raphael’s, Laura Bennett for “Hogwarts” while the Senior section was taken out by Jaz Dunlop from Cowra High School for “Immortal Jellyfish.”

Cowra Shire Council Deputy Mayor, Judi Smith, said that the RAFCA Awards “once again demonstrated their commitment to promoting sustainability and artistic ingenuity within the Cowra community.”

“The event featured a diverse array of entries from local schools, community groups, and individuals who wholeheartedly embraced the ethos of recycling and repurposing,” said Cowra Deputy Mayor Judi Smith.

“The inclusion of an All Ability category resonated with both participants and attendees, underscoring the event's commitment to inclusivity and diversity in the world of recycled art. This category not only showcased remarkable artistic skills but also highlighted the power of creativity to transcend barriers and enrich lives,” she said.

"This year saw an incredible influx of entries from talented artists across Cowra. The enthusiasm and creativity on display were truly inspiring, and it's heartening to see the community come together in celebration of recycled art."

The RAFCA Awards have been a hallmark event in Cowra, not only as a platform for recognising the exceptional artistry within the community but also as a driving force behind environmental consciousness. Through this event, Cowra continues to lead by example, showcasing the transformative potential of recycling while nurturing artistic expression.
