The Cowra Regional Livestock Selling Centre, a cornerstone of the local agricultural community, is celebrating its 60th anniversary, in its current location, on September 25, 2024. Located on Young Road, the Cowra Saleyards are owned and operated by Cowra Council and have been a pivotal hub for livestock trading in the region.

The Cowra Saleyards attract a full contingent of both local and export buyers bidding for supreme quality lambs and sheep every Wednesday from 11:30 am. Known for providing a stress-free environment for livestock, the facility offers clean, cost effective and safe yards and loading ramps, as well as 24-hour surveillance, night lighting, disability access, and a recently upgraded dual B- double truck wash. An innovative irrigation system and water-efficiency program installed by the

Council ensures that water from the truck wash facilities is recycled and irrigated onto holding paddocks. Canteen facilities are also available on sale days, providing convenience for sellers and buyers alike.

Chairman Bill West reflected on the milestone, stating, “The Cowra Saleyards have been a vital part of our community for six decades, supporting our local farmers and economy. The upgrades and modern facilities demonstrate the commitment to maintaining a top-tier livestock selling centre that meets the needs of our community and attracts buyers from far and wide.”

The Cowra Saleyards are MSA licensed and quality assurance certified, with six selling agents based in Cowra trading prime fat lambs and sheep, including Allan Gray & Co, Norman C. Bellamy, JJ Dresser & Co, James P Keady, Elders, and Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon & Co. and Nutrien Ag and currently upgrading all four drafts with electronic tag readers to comply with NSW sheep electronic trackability requirements.

As the Cowra Saleyards commemorate their 60th anniversary, Cowra Council acknowledges efforts of those over the decades who have supported this important facility and the important role it plays in the Cowra community, not just the farming sector and extend their gratitude to all who have supported and contributed to its success over the years.
