Barbie fever has officially hit Cowra if the ticket sales and support at Cowra Civic Centre are anything to go by since the premiere last week.

Cowra Civic Centre Manager Jarrad Shiells has been rapt with the response so far but certainly not surprised at the movie’s popularity.

“The Barbie movie has been attracting buzz and attention for some time now across the world and Cowra is no different,” said Mr Shiells.

We have had many families attend our screenings even with dad in tow,” he said.

Barbie, starring Australia’s own Margot Robbie, is certainly making a noise having passed $1 billion at the box office globally. It is only the 53rd movie in history to do so and 45th on the all-time list. Currently the Greta Gerwig film has taken in $1,031,481,000 in just 17 days and is the highest grossing film of 2023 so far. Gerwig is also the first solo female director to have crossed the $1 billion threshold.

We had an incredible response to the opening few nights especially the premiere with many getting into the mood and dressing up as Barbie and Ken.,” said Jarrad.

We were busy but the new layout and atmosphere also received a big thumbs up from patrons over the first four screenings of which three were sold out.”

The night also consisted of an array of events and novelties as well as prizes for best dressed and social media interactive prizes.

We had outstanding numbers with over 200 attending four screenings and even better feedback,” Mr Shiells said.

It is a great lead into our September School Holiday program which has everything from live performances for kids and adults and will be capped at the end of September by the return of Limerick and the Shamrock Dancers,” he said.
