Native Bird Photo + Art Competition in the Cowra Region

Entries Open: Monday 7 October 2024

Entries Close: Monday 4 November 2024

The Archibird Prize is a native bird photo competition held in the Cowra Region NSW run by Cowra Council’s 355 committee, the Cowra Natural Resource Management Advisory Committee (NRM) and in collaboration with Mid Lachlan Landcare, Cowra Woodland Birds and Central Tablelands Local Land Services.

The Archibird was launched in 2019 and is run in October aligned with National Bird Week.

Spring is the perfect time of year to connect with nature and snap some amazing pics of our native birds; go for a walk through your local park; get up and close to nature and go for a bush walk through the many beautiful national parks and forests in the area; or simply sit and watch the birds visiting and making a home in your backyard.

We hope you all love and appreciate birds as much as we do. Birds are incredible creatures that play an essential part in our ecosystem;

  • Birds help to disperse seeds and are fantastic pollinators, keeping your garden and nature fertile and healthy, and helping to shape the plant life we see around us.

  • They are natural pest controllers and predators, helping to maintain the delicate balance between plant and herbivore, predator and prey.

  • They are natures messengers that tell us about the health of the planet, as they respond quickly to changes in the environment.

  • And not to mention, birds are majestic, funny and beautiful.

This year Warren Chad will be judging the photography competition. Warren grew up on a small farm near Quirindi in Central Northern NSW, it was here that he developed his interest and appreciation for nature. In 1985 he obtained his first field guide of Australian birds, becoming an avid birdwatcher and through the years his love of nature evolved into what it is now. Warren does wildlife photography and also takes active roles in initiatives to help maintain wildlife and natural ecosystems, in particular the Lachlan River and its associated environs.  We thank Warren for his help with this competition and greatly appreciate his efforts.

This Year we will also be doing an art competition for Infants and Primary School kids.

They may submit a colouring-in, a drawing, a painting or any other arty creation they like. We have some fantastic vouchers for our local young youth to win and all winners and runners up will be displayed at the Cowra Library. There are 4 colouring ins to choose from linked below, as well as the terms and conditions. Please drop any entries at the Customer service desk in Council Chambers located on 116 Kendal Street, Cowra.
